Rio de Janeiro - Regent Mariner: Travelogue

Feb 25, 2013 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil : Aboard the Regent Mariner

Our first glimpse of Rio de Janeiro is of Copacabana Beach from the ocean and the Captain has brought the ship to a dead stop in the water to admire the sunrise over Rio de Janeiro. The ship turns port side then starboard side, and does a complete 360 so that all aboard, who are awake at 6:00 a.m. are rewarded with the view from their own private balcony!

What a stunner of a sight..stark, bare, granite rock peaks rising from the ocean (as large as tall buildings)..framed by lush tropical rainforest forest marching up the hills in behind, and in between the rocks are sandy beaches and row upon row of high rise buildings. You can imagine what this land looked like when the early explorers first saw it. As we continue by sea along the shoreline and into the port area, the areas hidden by the rocks are revealed and you begin to realize how spread out the city is.

Picture in your mind a string of pearls laying on a green velvet background. The pearls are of uneven size, some quite large and others small. The pearls are represented by the rocks and the string holding the pearls together are the many beaches. The green velvet background is the lush rainforest. This is Rio de Janeiro. Beautiful! I can hardly wait to see more!!
